Wyoming Uranium Mine Company Cited by Nuclear Regulatory Commission

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says a uranium mining company has agreed to corrective measures after radioactive sludge from Wyoming leaked from a truck onto a highway.

The leak happened March 29 and was noticed on U.S. 191 outside a radioactive waste disposal facility near Blanding, in southern Utah.

The NRC said Wednesday the barium sulfate sludge originated at Cameco's Smith Ranch-Highland uranium mine in east-central Wyoming and contained low levels of radioactive material.

A similar leak happened last year. Cameco spokesman Kenneth Vaughn says Cameco has suspended sludge shipments while investigating how to prevent another leak.

Ryan Johnson with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality says it's unknown where along the highway the leak began. Vaughn says testing a few days later showed no sign of leakage along the route.
