CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Lighter winds and cooler temperatures in the forecast could help firefighters battling a 1,000-acre wildfire in the Medicine Bow National Forest in southeast Wyoming. Strong winds spread the flames yesterday, but so far, no structures are threatened. About 120 firefighters and a helicopter are on site, and fire managers are calling in four air tankers.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Federal investigators are recommending more training for pilots after finding that a combination of mechanical problems and inadequate monitoring by the captain likely caused a passenger jet to sail of the runway at the Jackson Hole Airport in 2010. In a report released yesterday, the National Transportation Safety Board said the captain failed to notice wing flaps hadn't deployed and could have manually deployed them to keep the aircraft on the runway. No one was hurt.

GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) — Two Wyoming cities have made it into the top five in a research firm's ranking of small cities' economies. Gillette took the No. 4 spot while Sheridan was ranked fifth. Florida-based Policom takes into account multiple factors when creating the rankings, including jobs, per capita personal income and population growth trends.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A planned roundup of dozens of wild mustangs from the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range along the Montana-Wyoming border could begin later this month. Federal officials with the Bureau of Land Management say the roundup is needed to reduce the size of the famous herd. They say the effort could begin no sooner than June 20.
