Since last July Wyoming residents struggling to find health insurance that covers preexisting conditions have had  a new option.

R.J. Ours, for the American Cancer Society's, Cancer Action Network, wants Wyomingites to know about this federal program.

"We're just trying to get the word out to folks with cancer or other pre-existing conditions like heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, etc., that this opportunity is available."

Ours says the Pre-existing Conditions Insurance Plan offers meaningful coverage with a broad range of health benefits, including primary and specialty care and prescription drugs.

However, he says there are conditions for eligibility;  You have to have been without health insurance for six months or more, and have to have been denied coverage previously, but the PCIP coverage, once applied for, is immediate.

"There's no waiting period for treatment of your condition, for follow up testing, for prescription drugs to treat your condition. Once your on the plan, your on the plan."

This insurance plan covers the gap between now and 2014 when denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions will no longer be allowed by private insurers.
