THE WYOMING CHAPTER OF THE AARP LAST WEEK SPONSORED RENOWNED AND REFORMED FRAUDSTER FRANK ABAGNALE -- THE FOCUS OF THE MOVIE "CATCH ME IF YOU CAN," -- TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT FRAUD AND HOW THEY CAN PROTECT THEMSELVES.
ABAGNALE SAYS EDUCATION IS THE BEST WAY FOR HONEST PEOPLE TO AVOID BECOMING VICTIMS IN SCAMS, SUCH AS THE ONE THAT TELLS THEM THAT THEY FAILED TO REPORT FOR JURY DUTY AND THEY MUST PAY MONEY OR ELSE GET ARRESTED.

ABAGNALE SAID SOCIAL MEDIA HAS ENHANCED THE ABILITY OF SCAMMERS TO VICTIMIZE PEOPLE, BECAUSE THE SCAMMERS CAN LOOK ON FACEBOOK, FIND PERSONAL INFORMATION ABOUT FRIENDS AND RELATIVES, AND USE THAT TO SOUND CONVINCING.

THE INTERNET HAS MULTIPLIED THE ABILITY OF SCAMMERS IN WAYS UNHEARD OF TWENTY YEARS AGO SUCH AS THE NIGERIAN SCAM WITH SOMEONE SAYING YOU NEED TO SEND THEM MONEY TO RELEASE A HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY.

INSTEAD OF SENDING OUT 30,000 MAILINGS, THEY CAN NOW SEND OUT 30 MILLION EMAILS WITH THE SAME HOPED-FOR RESULTS.

ABAGNALE SAID FRAUD COSTS PEOPLE NEARLY A TRILLION DOLLARS A YEAR IN THE UNITED STATES.

HE HAD A FEW SUGGESTIONS FOR PEOPLE TO PROTECT THEMSELVES INCLUDING

CHECKING YOUR CREDIT REGULARLY.

PROVIDE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ONLY WHEN NECESSARY.

SUSE A MICRO-CUT SHREDDER TO DESTROY ALL MAIL AND DOCUMENTS WITH YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION.

AND BE MORE SELECTIVE WITH WHOM YOU SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION.
