Thousands of Cheyenne students will head back to school Monday and police are reminding drivers about a new state law making it easier to ticket people who blow past stopped school buses.

The law, which went into effect July 1, allows a registered owner of a vehicle to be fined $195 if their vehicle is caught on camera passing a stopped school bus and the driver can't be identified.

"We're still working out the logistics of how that law will play out, but it's another tool for going after people who are passing the stopped school buses," said Officer Kevin Malatesta.

"One thing to note in those is it's a non-moving violation, so it's not something that would lead to their driver's license being suspended," he added.

Malatesta is also urging drivers to slow down and pay attention in school zones.  He says speeding in a school zone could cost you $110 to $360.
