Earlier this year, as part of a school project, a group of California elementary school students created a free hotline that offers inspirational advice to anybody who calls it.

Many call from outside Wyoming but get directed to the call center because they have cell phones with a 307 area code.

The Suicide Prevention Lifeline will be open to callers beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Longer-term, their goal is to operate the lifeline all day, every day.

The department says the request would allow it to look for a call center provider.
