Sheridan’s Garrett Coon is the Gatorade Wyoming Football Player of the Year
The Gatorade Company has announced that Sheridan High School’s Garrett Coon is its 2019-20 Gatorade Wyoming Football Player of the Year.
Now in its 35th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, Coon becomes the eighth player chosen from Sheridan High School for the Gatorade Wyoming Football Player of the Year honor.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Coon as Wyoming’s best high school football player. Now, he’s a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award to be announced later in December.
Coon led the Broncs to the Class 4A state championship last month. The senior ran for 1,589 yards and 29 touchdowns. He averaged 8.1 yards per rush and 132.4 yards per game. Coon also caught 21 passes for 299 yards and six touchdowns. On defense, he had 81 tackles, three interceptions, and a fumble recovery. Coon also scored twice on defense. Coon is a three-time All-State selection and two-time member of the Casper Star-Tribune’s Super 25.
Off the field, Coon maintains a 3.48-grade point average. He has volunteered locally on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters and youth football programs in Sheridan according to the release from the Gatorade Company.
Cheyenne Central coach Mike Apodaca said in the release, “Garrett Coon is a pretty special player. He’s dominant on both sides of the ball and you have to account for him on every play.”
Coon remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
He joins recent winners from Wyoming including Parker Christensen from Sheridan (2018-19), Brett Brenton of Natrona County (2017-18), Coy Steel of Sheridan (2016-17), Theo Dawson from Jackson (2015-16), and Christian Mayer of Big Horn (2014-15), among the state’s list of former award winners.
As a part of Gatorade’s cause marketing platform “Play it Forward,” Coon has the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of his choosing. He is also eligible to submit an essay to win one of twelve $10,000 spotlight grants for the organization of choice, which will be announced throughout the year.
