THE DEFENDANTS IN THE FEDERAL MULTI-STATE PRESCRIPTION DRUG CONSPIRACY ALLEGEDLY ORCHESTRATED BY A FORMER CASPER DOCTOR WILL GO TO TRIAL IN LATE APRIL.
U.S. DISTRICT COURT JUDGE ALAN JOHNSON ON FRIDAY SET THE APRIL 29TH TRIAL DATE AND MOTION DEADLINES FOR SHAKEEL KAHN AND THREE OTHER DEFENDANTS.

KAHN, HIS WIFE LYN (VOSS) KAHN, HIS BROTHER NABEEL "SONNY" KAHN, AND ARIZONA RESIDENT SHAWWNA THACKER WILL BE TRIED ON CHARGES NEARLY TWO-AND-A-HALF YEARS AFTER SHAKEEL AND LYN KAHN WERE ARRESTED IN CASPER IN NOVEMBER 2016.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT COMES AFTER MORE THAN A YEAR OF LEGAL WRANGLING IN THE DENVER-BASED 10TH U.S CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS WHETHER SHAKEEL KAHN COULD USE MONEY -- FUNDS NOT ALLEGEDLY RELATED TO HIS ILLEGAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TRADE -- TO HIRE HIS OWN DEFENSE ATTORNEYS.

THE COURT RULED IN HIS FAVOR, SO THE TRIAL IS NOW ON.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CHARGES SOME OR ALL DEFENDANTS WITH CONSPIRACY TO DISTRIBUTE, POSSESSING AND DISPENSING OXYCODONE AND OTHER PRESCRIPTION OPIOIDS; CONSPIRACY TO DISTRIBUTE CERTAIN PRESCRIPTION DRUGS RESULTING IN DEATH; POSSESSION OR USE OF FIREARMS DURING A DRUG CRIME; UNLAWFUL USE OF COMMUNICATIONS DEVICES; AND MONEY LAUNDERING.

SHAKEEL KAHN ALSO IS CHARGED WITH OPERATING A CONTINUING CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE, AND THACKER IS CHARGED WITH A SOLE COUNT OF CONSPIRACY TO DISTRIBUTE OXYCODONE AND OTHER DRUGS RESULTING IN DEATH.

A FIFTH CO-DEFENDANT, PAUL BELAND, HAS PLEADED GUILTY TO SEVERAL COUNTS.

SHAKEEL AND LYN KAHN DEALT WITH CUSTOMERS WHO PAID THEM $500 IN CASH FOR A PRESCRIPTION.

CUSTOMERS OFTEN WOULD RESELL THE DRUGS, AND SOME OF THEM WERE CONVICTED OF RELATED CRIMES IN NATRONA COUNTY DISTRICT COURT.

TWO CHEYENNE FAMILY YMCA PRESCHOOL TEACHERS HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED AFTER CHILD ABUSE ALLEGATIONS WERE MADE AGAINST THEM THURSDAY.

CEO PATTY WALTERS SAYS THEY RECEIVED A COMPLAINT FROM A WOMAN WHO WAS IN HOLLIDAY PARK AND OBSERVED THE TEACHERS DOING THINGS THAT MADE HER UNCOMFORTABLE AND CONCERNED.

WALTERS SAYS THE LEARNING CENTER DIRECTOR, WHO TOOK THE COMPLAINT, TOLD THE WOMAN THAT THE Y WOULD BE FOLLOWING UP ON THE MATTER AND TAKING IT VERY SERIOUSLY.

"UNFORTUNATELY, I GUESS SHE DIDN'T LIKE THAT RESPONSE SO SHE WENT ONTO FACEBOOK, ONTO A GARAGE SALE SITE, AND STARTED A CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT SHE SAW OR FELT THAT SHE HAD OBSERVED AND THAT JUST SORT OF STARTED AN ONSLAUGHT OF PEOPLE CHIMING IN."

WALTERS SAYS THE WOMAN "DID THE RIGHT THING" BY REPORTING THE INCIDENT, BUT SHE WISHES THE WOMAN WOULD HAVE "LET THINGS RUN THEIR COURSE."

WALTERS SAYS THE TEACHERS WILL REMAIN ON SUSPENSION UNTIL AN INTERNAL INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETE.

A LARGE MILITARY TRAINING COMPLEX OVER THE NORTHERN PLAINS IS INCREASING THE MAXIMUM ALTITUDE ALLOWED FOR FLIGHT CREWS.

THE 35,000-SQUARE-MILE POWDER RIVER TRAINING COMPLEX WILL NOW HAVE HIGHER MAXIMUM ALTITUDES OVER THE DAKOTAS, MONTANA AND WYOMING.

THE EXPANSION WILL DOUBLE THE CURRENT 26,000-FOOT LIMIT, ALLOWING DETECTION-EVADING STEALTH AIRCRAFT TO FLY AT NORMAL OPERATING ALTITUDES OF 52,000 FEET

SEN. MIKE ROUNDS SAYS THE HIGHER ALTITUDES WOULD BE USED FOR TRAINING EXERCISES ONLY FOR A FEW HOURS EACH DAY OVER A 10- TO 15-DAY PERIOD EACH YEAR. COMMERCIAL PASSENGER AIR TRAFFIC WOULD BE RESTRICTED DURING THE TRAINING.

ROUNDS SAYS THE ALTITUDES WILL BE NECESSARY ONCE THE U.S. AIR FORCE AND ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE BEGIN TRANSITIONING TO A NEW BOMBER CALLED THE B-21 RAIDER IN 2023.

THE CITY OF RAWLINS HAS DECIDED TO KEEP MUNICIPAL FUNDS AT BANK OF THE WEST AFTER THE BANK ANNOUNCED IT WOULD NO LONGER DO BUSINESS WITH COMPANIES THAT IT PERCEIVES AS DETRIMENTAL TO THE ENVIRONMENT.
THE CITY COUNCIL VOTED 5-1 LAST WEEK TO KEEP AN ESTIMATED $9 MILLION AT THE BANK.

MAYOR ROBERT GRAUBERGER HAD SUGGESTED THE CITY MOVE ITS MUNICIPAL FUNDS AFTER THE SAN FRANCISCO-BASED BANK'S DECISION IN AUGUST TO DIVEST FROM CERTAIN FOSSIL FUEL INVESTMENTS.

THAT MOVE PROVOKED THREATS OF RETALIATION IN STATES SUCH AS WYOMING THAT GET MUCH OF THEIR REVENUE FROM COAL, OIL AND NATURAL GAS EXTRACTION.

LAST MONTH, THE CITY OF ROCK SPRINGS DECIDED TO TAKE ITS MUNICIPAL FUNDS OUT OF BANK OF THE WEST.
