SEVERAL DOZEN STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS VOICED THEIR OPPOSITION TO THE PROPOSED CLOSURE OF THE ALTERNATIVE STAR LANE CENTER PROGRAM DURING A MEETING OF THE NATRONA COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT'S BOARD OF TRUSTEES ON MONDAY.
DR. SARAH DAANE-FROELICH SAID HER SON GRADUATED FROM STAR LANE, WHICH USES PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING TO APPLY ACADEMIC SUBJECTS TO SKILLS.
HER SON, FRANKLIN FROELICH, NOW IS IN HIS SECOND YEAR AT CASPER COLLEGE AND INTENDS TO EARN A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING.
EARLIER MONDAY, DISTRICT TRUSTEES HEARD A PRESENTATION SHOWING STUDENTS IN THE PROGRAM, WHICH OPERATES AT THE YEAR-OLD PATHWAYS INNOVATION CENTER, WERE UNDERPERFORMING IN CORE ACADEMIC SUBJECTS ACCORDING TO TEST SCORES.
FRANKLIN FROELICH DISAGREED, SAYING STAR LANE EMPOWERED HIM TO NOW DEAL WITH CALCULUS AND PHYSICS, AND HE'S A STRAIGHT-A STUDENT.
STUART MACKENZIE SAID STAR LANE HAD THE SAME EFFECT ON HIS SON, WHO IS NOW A STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING.
MACKENZIE RECOMMENDED THE TRUSTEES DO SOME PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING OF THEIR OWN IN LIGHT OF WHAT HE AND OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED COMPARED WITH THE TEST RESULTS DATA.
HE SAID TRUSTEES CANNOT MAKE A REASONABLE DECISION BASED ON THE CONFLICTING LOWER TEST SCORES AND THE SUCCESS OF PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING.

LARAMIE, WYO. (AP) - A UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING STUDENT IS BEING TREATED IN A HOSPITAL AFTER BEING DIAGNOSED WITH MENINGITIS.
UW STUDENT HEALTH SERVICE DIRECTOR DR. JOANNE STEANE SAYS STUDENT LIVES OFF CAMPUS AND THE RISK TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY IS LOW.
BUT STEANE SAYS AS A PRECAUTION THE UNIVERSITY AND THE WYOMING DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH ARE CONTACTING INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE HAD CLOSE, PERSONAL CONTACT WITH THE STUDENT. THESE INDIVIDUALS WILL BE OFFERED PREVENTIVE TREATMENT WITH THE APPROPRIATE ANTIBIOTIC.
ALTHOUGH MENINGITIS CAN BE CONTAGIOUS, IT IS NOT AS EASILY SPREAD AS THE VIRUSES THAT CAUSE THE COMMON COLD OR INFLUENZA. ONLY SOME TYPES OF MENINGITIS ARE CONTAGIOUS, AND ONLY SOME TYPES REQUIRE PREVENTIVE ANTIBIOTICS.
THE SYMPTOMS OF MENINGITIS INCLUDE FEVER, HEADACHE AND STIFF NECK.
