Wyoming Mother Charged With Attempted Murder For Shooting Son

A Rock Springs woman is facing attempted murder charges for shooting her son in the neck last month.

That's according to a release from the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office

According to the releaser, deputies were called out on a report of a shooting on June 21 at 5:45 p.m. to a home on Antelope Drive, When they arrived, they found 37-year-old Cameron Scott Colley had been shot once in the neck. Deputies provided emergency aid until Colley could be taken to Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County. He was later flown to the University of Utah Medical Center for advanced treatment.

Mother Told Detectives  She Shot Her Son In Self-Defense

According to the release, 57-year-old Alice Ione Halstead told deputies she had shot her son in self-defense during a confrontation in her bedroom. Detectives later interviewed Colley in the hospital and got a search warrant for the home.

Deputies arrested Halstead at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 11

She is charged with attempted second-degree murder, domestic battery, and possession of a controlled substance.

Under Wyoming law, a second-degree murder conviction carries a penalty of a  minimum of 20 years in prison, with the maximum penalty being life in prison. At last report Halstead was being held without bond in the Sweetwater County Detention Center pending her initial court appearance.

The sheriff's office reminds people that everyone is presumed innocent until being convicted in a court of law.
