Buford, Wyoming, Population Reduced To None

Remember when the big story was that Buford, Wyoming had a population of one?

One guy owned the gas station, and he lived behind it in a small house. He declared the place a town and elected himself mayor. The official town sign said the population was "1." The BBC even ran a story about Don Sammons, who lived there alone for years as the famous "one-man population." That all changed.

He met a woman and got married. They moved away. The new owner tried to keep the story of the town with a population of one, but he could not find anyone who wanted to live there.

So what's the deal with Buford today?

Currently, the official population of Buford is zero.

The last official word was that the house behind the store was to be sold and renovated, and that someone or some people were going to move into it.

That's about it. Nothing new to report.

People do live in the area. There are even homes in sight of the store. But they are not officially in Buford, so it does not count.

It is worth stopping to visit the little "town." That place currently boasts the lowest gas prices in the state. In fact, their gas prices usually hold that honor. It's a good idea to top off on your way by, no matter if you need it or not.

Buford has actually been there a long time. The town was founded in 1866 as a military camp and tent town during the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad.
