You've got to give credit to the folks at the University of Wyoming for their sense of humor with their Colorado State University rivalry.

The Border War is an intense, historic college football rivalry between the University of Wyoming Cowboys and Colorado State University Rams, originating in 1899. As the longest-running rivalry west of the Mississippi, they play annually for the Bronze Boot trophy. The teams have met over 115 times, with games alternating between Laramie and Fort Collins.

The Bronze Boot: Instituted in 1968, this trophy is awarded to the winner of the football game. The trophy, a boot worn in Vietnam by CSU ROTC instructor Dan J. Romero, is famously housed at the winning school.

The Rivalry Run: ROTC detachments from both schools participate in a 65-mile relay, carrying the game ball along U.S. Highway 287 from one campus to the other, with a ceremonial exchange at the Wyoming-Colorado state line.

History & Intensity: The series is often marked by intense competition and dramatic games, with matchups dating back to 1899.

Recent Results: As of late 2025, the teams continued their annual battle, with Wyoming winning 28-0 in Oct. 2025 to reclaim the Bronze Boot, notes the Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

The rivalry extends beyond football to all sports played between the two institutions, often referred to as the Border War, according to the University of Wyoming Athletics. Future matchups are scheduled through 2035, ensuring the continuation of this long-standing tradition.
