Wyoming needs more Bigfoot sightings. We have some, but not that many, because we are mostly an open plains state. Bigfoot likes heavily forested areas.

I went looking for the top Wyoming Bigfoot encounters, with over 28 reported sightings in 50 years. It turns out that they often occur in the park and Wind River range areas. Notable, terrifying, and sometimes investigated reports include aggressive camp encounters. People have reported seeing large bipedal creatures in national parks, and experiences from professional wildlife managers suggest a significant presence in remote, high-altitude locations.

Here are five of the top or most detailed Wyoming Bigfoot encounters based on available reports:

John Mionczynski’s Wind River Encounter (1972): A Wyoming Game and Fish biologist researching sheep reported a large creature that stalked his tent, snored, and pressed its hand—with an opposing thumb—against his tent, creating a terrifying, long-lasting encounter.

Grieb Lake, Yellowstone Backpacking (Pre-1983): Two brothers reported a large creature running on two legs through trees, stopping at their tent, and continuing towards the lake, rejecting the possibility of a bear or moose due to the bipedal, heavy rhythm.

Pahaska Tepee Encounter (Near Yellowstone): Mentioned as a notable, older sighting, a report in the area near the east entrance of Yellowstone involved a, for the time, highly detailed description of a "Squatch" sighting, highlighting the frequency of encounters in Park County.

The Tent 'Collapse' Incident (Wind River Range): Often linked to the 1972 investigations, this incident involved a creature so bold it caused a tent to collapse on the occupant. Later investigations mentioned in Monster Quest noted the hand did not match a bear's paw.

Recent Park County Sightings (2000s-2010): Multiple reports compiled by the BFRO note high activity in Park County, with sightings occurring as recently as 2010, contributing to Wyoming's reputation as a hotspot for encounters.

The highest concentration of these reports comes from Park County (9 sightings), followed by Lincoln (4), and Teton/Carbon (3 each). These areas are densely forested and frequently visited by hikers and campers.

To report a Bigfoot sighting, the most recognized method is submitting details to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) via their online form, which allows for detailed descriptions, location tracking, and optional confidentiality. Other options include the Bigfoot Mapping Project or specialized local groups like Bigfoot 911.
