First Fatal Case in Fort Collins Reported

We are sad to report that a resident of Fort Collins has died due to West Nile virus. The first West Nile virus case was detected back in June in the city of Fort Collins.

West Nile Spread and Infection Rates in Colorado

West Nile was detected, but no humans have been infected yet. However, Colorado leads the nation with humans infected with West Nile virus in 2025, with 74 cases. Weld County currently has the most positive cases at 16. Larimer is second with 14.

Additional Deaths Confirmed in 2025

It was announced this week that a Fort Collins resident died from the West Nile virus. We also just received word that there has been a second death of the virus in Montrose County.

Understanding the Risk and Symptoms

The death in Fort Collins was the first in Colorado in 2025. 50 people died from West Nile virus in 2023. UC Health says that West Nile virus can affect anybody regardless of age or how healthy you are. They say that neurological impairments and swelling of the brain are severe side effects.
