Casper’s Beloved Bandshell Faces Crucial Repairs After 87 Years
Casper is full of historic buildings, stories, and places that have a significant impact on the city and its residents. One of those historic spots is the center point of Washington Park, and that's the Bandshell.
If you've performed there or had the chance to check out the old building, you know it looks like it's seen better days. The bandshell has been around since 1939 and has seen thousands of performers and hosted thousands of events; if it could talk, the stories it could tell would be incredible.
After 87 years of rain, snowstorms, thunderstorms, wind, heat, and the Wyoming cold, the Bandshell is starting to look its age. That's what the City of Casper is trying to do with Proposition #08.
Prop #08 will provide $1.5 million (plus any interest earned) for the design, reconstruction, and preservation of the Bandshell. The project will address structural repairs, accessibility improvements, and modern facility upgrades to help ensure the bandshell continues to serve the community for years to come.
With all the work underway in Washington Park now, it only makes sense that the City of Casper would like to proceed with the Bandshell project. Take a look at Prop #08.
Current challenges include:
- Drainage problems have caused water damage and mold in the basement storage area
- Limited storage space for equipment and event materials
- Outdated interior and exterior finishes
- Aging lighting and sound systems
- Roof nearing the end of its service life and needing repair or replacement
- ADA accessibility improvements needed for performers and spectators
- Stage size limitations make it difficult to support a wider variety of events
- Addressing these issues will help ensure the bandshell can continue to safely support community events and public gatherings.
