If your kids have been nagging you about letting them get out and shoot, but you're not comfortable with that idea, the Platte River Rod and Gun Club has the solution. The 2026 Kids Fun Shoot is coming to the club on Saturday, August 1, and it's free for all participants.

Now, I want to clarify that if your kids already shoot, they're still invited to the Kids Fun Shoot. I don't want it to seem like they can't go, because all kids are welcome to shoot.

After a year off, the shoot is back and still FREE for all kids aged 8-16. There will be three age classes (8-10, 11-13, and 14-16). The day will be great, filled with target shooting, sportsmanship, and learning to safely handle and use a firearm under the supervision of certified range officers and skilled adults. Lunch, drinks, and prizes are all included in the FREE event.

If you've never been around firearms, and your kids are interested, this is a great chance for the family to learn together. All participating kids need a parent/guardian to accompany them to the range.

Here's what your kids learn:

  • Safe firearm handling
  • Range commands & etiquette
  • Basic shooting skills
  • Sportsmanship and responsibility

The day will give every kid a chance to show off their shooting skills or, if they've never shot before, help them develop them. There will be target shooting and shooting competitions designed to give every shooter a chance to win, regardless of their skill level.

If your kids already have a .22 and ammo, bring it. If they don't have one, that's ok; there will be .22s and ammo available for them to use. Eye and hearing protection is needed to participate; again, if they don't have that equipment, some will be provided.

This day was designed to give your kids the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, shooting, and hanging out with other kids who enjoy the same things. If you want to get your kid(s) involved, fill out the registration form and return it so that Platter River Gun and Rod Club has a head count to plan for equipment, lunch, and drinks.
