Does waking up early really make an impact on life for you? I wake up around 2 am most days to go to work and get my day started. When I say that to people, I usually get a loud "Ugh, no thanks." If you're not an early riser, you don't know what you are missing out on.

The early parts of my day are dedicated to starting on the right foot. Checking email, prepping for appointments, catching up on the latest news, planning my day, and sipping on coffee are all things I consider the perfect way to start the day.  Next, I start prepping for work and making sure things are ready for my show and other projects I have to work on.

I've been an early riser for over 25-years, and wouldn't have it any other way. Sure, there may be the occasional "sleep-in day," but I try to stick to my routine. There's nothing I enjoy more than waking up, having coffee, beginning work, and watching the world wake up.

Since I get up that early and go to work before 5 am, I can say there are many people in Wyoming who do the same. Many of the industries here begin early. Ranches and farms, mines and oil fields, hospitals and medical centers, restaurants, coffee shops, and bakeries are all places where jobs start early. In some instances, they start early and work late.

In 2018, a self-help book by Robin Sharma became a bestseller, advocating waking up at 5 am and spending the first hour of the day focusing on yourself. Whether it's exercise, meditation, prayer, or reading the Bible, focusing on yourself is the key. If you have a family, how many times per day do you say, "I just want a minute for myself?" Taking that hour will give you 60 minutes for yourself.

Waking up early has it's advantages:

  • You tend to get better sleep.
  • Stress levels are reduced because you're not rushing around and stressing.
  • You're likely to be more proactive.
  • Giving yourself time to start your day naturally, allows your brain to be less groggy.

I read a study ranking the cities leading the charge for the 5 am club, and only Cheyenne, WY, made the list at #213 out of 250 US Cities. I bet you can guess which cities were ranked at the top. If you guess the cities with the highest populations, you are correct.

In true "study" fashion, Wyoming doesn't get a fair shake. The population of the top 10 cities is more than double the population of the entire state of Wyoming. I would bet that, per capita, more Wyomingites are early risers.
