CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Federal officials say a Wyoming judge must determine whether the city of Casper is liable for a 2015 fire before they can determine how much it can receive in reimbursement.

The 2015 blaze, which originated in a Casper landfill, burned nearly 16 sq. miles of land.

Records say the Wyoming State Forestry Division and the city estimate they spent about $346,000 fighting the fire.

Casper officials have applied for grant money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which the agency has approved.

The city of Casper asked a judge in 2016 to determine whether it was liable for the fire, but the judge has yet to make the decision and it is unclear when it could come.
