Cheyenne police say they are working to address burglaries occurring at storage units.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says many people use storage facilities to tuck away their old furniture, holiday decorations or picture albums, but storage units can be a target for burglars hoping to find something of value.

"Data over the last five years shows that when these facilities are made more secure, they’re less likely to be targeted by criminals," said Malatesta.

"Some of the measures taken by these property owners includes fencing off access to the facility and providing users with unique identification numbers or keys to access the facility," he added.

Malatesta says additional things a customer can ask about are the amount and position of security cameras, the presence of on-site security and lighting over the units.
