Keep Casper Smoke Free has started an online crowdfunding campaign that aims to defray attorney’s fees in a suit the group plans to file against the city of Casper in district court later this year.

Keep Casper Smoke Free co-chair Kimberly Holloway says her group, which came up 61 signatures short of its smoking ban referendum target of 2,554 last month, is attempting to raise $3,000 by Dec. 12 so the complaint can be filed.

“We just started an online fundraiser for people interested in helping us stand up for the rights of voters that signed our petition,” Holloway said.

Holloway’s group is attempting to force the city to review nearly 100 referendum signatures they claim were rejected mistakenly.

The group claims it gathered about 3,000 signatures during its petition drive from June 28 to July 17. Over 600 of those signatures were rejected by city clerk V.H. McDonald during last month's official count.

In June, city councilors amended Casper’s public indoor smoking ban to allow smoking in taverns, lounges, bars, private clubs and healthcare facilities based within city limits.
