An Evansville man will be spending a long time in prison, after admitting he killed a man who was trying to disarm him last summer at an Evansville Sports Bar.

Twenty-one-year-old Samuel Renner was sentenced to 60 years to life in prison, after he pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated assault and battery and two counts of possession of a deadly weapon with unlawful intent.

Investigators say in late July, Renner was drinking at Taylor’s Sports bar in Evansville and got into a fight with another patron as he was leaving.

Prosecutors said Renner went home, got two guns and returned to the bar, where he fatally shot 41-year-old Todd Callies.

Callies and his friends were walking out of the bar, when they saw Renner pointing a gun at a number of other people in the parking lot.

Prosecutors say the group then attempted to disarm Renner and during the scuffle, three shots were fired.

Two of those shots struck Callies in his chest.

At his sentencing, Renner said he did not remember everything that happened during that night, but felt he was losing conciousness when he was tackled, and thought he had the gun pointed in the air when he fired.

He also said he has a horrible drinking problem.

When he was arrested and booked into the Natrona County Detention Center, police say Renner’s Blood Alcohol Content was at .132, and that was roughly 5 hours after the shooting.

His actual sentence is 60-years-to-life for second degree murder, 20-to-40 years for attempted second degree murder, six-to-10 years on each of six of the seven aggravated assault and battery charges, 9-to-10 years on the other aggravated assault and battery charges, and three-to-five years on both charges of possession of a deadly weapon with unlawful intent.

All sentences will be served concurrently, or at the same time.
