Wyomings First Lady Donates Books

First Lady Carol Mead and Scholastic Publishing have donated over 500 books to a summer reading program. This year is the second year Mrs. Mead has participated.  The books went to Evansville, Fort Washakie, Saint Stephens, Crowley, and Powell this summer. Mrs. Mead has teamed with the Scholastic Reading Ambassadors Program to encourage children to work on their literacy skills over the summer. Mrs. Mead is one of 48 First Spouses nationwide to participate in this effort.

The First Lady and Governor Mead have made education and literacy priorities. Mrs. Mead said,

“We are interested in the best outcomes possible for children. We believe a whole host of social problems can be addressed through education and specifically through literacy. Anything we can do to improve literacy in the State of Wyoming we want to do. Matt and I are grateful to have this opportunity to play a role in spreading the word to families all across Wyoming about the importance of summer reading and keeping students prepared when they return to school this fall,”

The Scholastic Reading Ambassadors Program aims to provide third, fourth and fifth graders books to maintain reading proficiency over the summer. The books are free and for the children to keep.

The Scholastic Reading Ambassadors Program has been ongoing for several years and the First Lady said she will participate in the future.
