Monday was a big day for advocates of a state managed wolf population in the state of Wyoming as the first hunting season, in many years, for gray wolves got underway

As of 4 p.m. Monday, two wolves were harvested according to the Wyoming Game & Fish Department. That means 50 more wolves can be hunted between now and December 31 to reach the 52 wolf quota.

The 2 wolves were taken from areas 2 and 6 of the designated 12 trophy hunting areas. The estimated population in the area stands at over 200 wolves.

Wolves are protected in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the John D. Rockefeller Junior Memorial Parkway, and the National Elk Refuge on the Wind River Reservation.
