REDDING, Calif. (AP) — Police in Northern California have detained a 23-year-old man in the death of his girlfriend's baby, whose body was found off the side of a highway less than a day after the two failed to return to the homeless shelter where they had been staying with the boy's mother.

According to the Associated Press, Sgt. Bill Schueller says that Christopher James McDonald, of Gillette, Wyo., is being held on suspicion of kidnapping and homicide in the death of 11-month-old Sabastian McDonald.
The baby's mother, who also is from Wyoming, reported him missing Thursday morning when she discovered that neither he nor McDonald were at the shelter. Schueller says Gifford asked McDonald to watch the boy the night before while she was waiting to be seen at the hospital.

McDonald was found alone in a park later in the day, and Sabastian's body was located Thursday night based on information he supplied. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.
