An elderly Casper woman has lost thousands of dollars after falling victim to a scam.

Police say a few weeks ago, a woman in her 60's, received a call from a person claiming to be from the US Embassy in Haiti, and that her grandson had been arrested and needed money for a lawyer.

The woman wired about $2,000 to the scammer, then a few days later received another call, claiming her grandson was changing attorneys and needed more money.

In all, Casper Police say the woman ended up losing about $27,000 before she notified law enforcement.

Police say a scam like this has been going around for awhile and it's been named the Grandson Scam.

Officials say the best way to avoid falling for the scam is to keep in touch with your relatives on occasion and call your local law enforcement if you suspect something.
