RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) — Motivated by a classmate's death, a group of Fremont County School District 6 students are lobbying the state Legislature to change laws about school bus safety.

The children made a presentation to Fremont County Commission recently, and the county board pledged its support.

On Dec. 20, 2011, Makayla Marie Strahle was struck and killed by a vehicle after stepping off her school bus.

Wind River Middle School principle Jeffrey Verosky tells the Associated Press that the incident spurred a group of students to get some school bus safety laws changed.

The Wind River High School and Middle School students traveled to Cheyenne during the recent legislative session and spoke with the joint Education Committee.

As a result, the committee will study school bus safety this summer and fall.
