UW Prepares for Frozen Pipes

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — University of Wyoming officials are taking precautionary measures this winter to ensure water pipes don't burst at the school as they did the past two winters.

Deputy director of utilities management, Frosty Selmer, says staff has been working to prepare the 70 buildings on campus for the cold.

He says more alarms have been installed to alert staff of freezing temperatures and door seals and air systems have been repaired.

Chief risk officer, Laura Betzold, says pipe bursts in previous winters resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. She says they were caused by failed components and windows being left open.

Additional staff will be on hand to inspect the school during winter closure when buildings won't be occupied for several days.
