Consistent with the first two readings, an indoor public smoking ban for the city of Casper passed on a 6-2 vote at Tuesday night's city council meeting.

The ordinance, if it makes it through a referendum process, will ban smoking in all public spaces including businesses and private clubs within the city limits.

An amendment to the fine structure that would have lowered the penalties for first and second offenses did not pass.

Council did agreed, however, to hold the effective date until September 1st, at which point, if sufficient signatures are gathered for a referendum in November, the ordinance will be suspended until after the vote.

It was stressed that signatures on a referendum will only be valid from registered voters living in the city of Casper.
