Rain Slows Growth of Alum Fire in Yellowstone

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Rain has slowed the growth of the largest fire burning in Yellowstone National Park.

Park officials say rain that soaked the southern portion of the park on Monday left about a third of an inch of rain across the Alum Fire. As a result, many overlooks and picnic areas along Grand Look Road between Fishing Bridge and Mud Volcano reopened Tuesday.

The fire is one of six that make up the Druid Complex Fire burning north of Yellowstone Lake. The Alum is the only one that had been active in recent days.

Rain has also slowed a new wildfire burning 12 miles north of Dubois. The Burroughs Fire was holding steady at around 1,800 acres and was 7 percent contained Tuesday.

It was started Thursday by lightning.
