CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — A poll shows that most Wyoming voters prefer to elect the state's superintendent of public instruction.

The poll found that 68 percent of respondents prefer an elected superintendent, while 23 percent would rather see the office as an appointed one. Nine percent were undecided.

The poll by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research of Jacksonville, Florida, interviewed 625 registered voters by telephone between Oct. 6 and Oct. 8. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.

Seventy percent of Republicans and 59 percent of Democrats polled preferred electing the position.

There was much controversy recently when the Legislature created a separate Education Department director appointed by the governor. The state Supreme Court struck down the law, saying it was unconstitutional.
