A FEDERAL GRAND JURY INDICTED A FORMER REGISTERED NURSE AT THE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL OF CONVERSE COUNTY IN DOUGLAS FOR STEALING NARCOTICS AND DILUTING PATIENTS' NARCOTICS.

THE GRAND JURY CHARGED RYAN JOSEPH HARRIS WITH TWO COUNTS OF TAMPERING WITH A CONSUMER PRODUCT BY REMOVING HYDROMORPHONE, KNOWN AS DILAUDID AND REMOVING MEPERIDINE, KNOWN AS DEMEROL, BY TAKING SOME OR ALL OF THE DRUGS FROM VIALS AND REPLACING THEM WITH SALINE SOLUTION.

HARRIS ALSO WAS CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF ACQUIRING THESE CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES.

THE INDICTMENT SAYS TAMPERING WITH THESE MEDICINES WAS DONE WITH RECKLESS DISREGARD FOR THE POSSIBLE HARM TO OTHER PEOPLE.

IF CONVICTED, EACH OF THE TAMPERING WITH A CONSUMER PRODUCT CARRIES A POTENTIAL SENTENCE OF UP TO 10 YEARS OF IMPRISONMENT.

EACH OF THE TWO COUNTS OF OBTAINING CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES BY DECEIT OR SUBTERFUGE CARRIES A POTENTIAL SENTENCE OF UP TO FOUR YEARS OF IMPRISONMENT.

ON JUNE 14, THE HOSPITAL ANNOUNCED ITS PHARMACY STAFF ON JUNE 2ND DISCOVERED THE TAMPERING WITH THE DRUGS.

A HOSPITAL SPOKESMAN SAID IT WAS UNKNOWN HOW MANY PATIENTS WERE AFFECTED.

HARRIS REPORTEDLY RECEIVED HYDROMORPHONE WHILE HE WAS A PATIENT AT THE HOSPITAL, HOSPITAL OFFICIALS SAID HE BECAME ADDICTED.

HE WAS SUSPENDED BY THE HOSPITAL AND THE STATE BOARD OF NURSING.
