Gun Laws: Every Home Should Have One [OPINION/POLL]
I watched pieces of the presidential debate tonight, and I caught the little bit of the back and forth on Gun Control, and frankly, I am a little worried.
Turns out, under Governor Romney, Massachusetts did enact an “Assault Weapon Ban” , and now he is against a ban, and yes, it is because he wanted the support of the NRA. (All Republicans do.)
In the debate, it seemed Romney was not only debating Obama, but the moderator too. Check out the video clip…
I saw on Twitter, that Rachel Maddow person thinks Obama “nailed it on Gun Control”, I don’t know how anyone could think that. It seemed to me that Obama only talked about what Romney has done. BUT, Obama has made it very clear that he is for more gun control, and for bans on certain weapons, and certain ammunition.
Here’s the thing… I own guns! LOTS of guns. Many have been passed down to the first born males in my family for generations, these I consider priceless, and rarely shoot them. (I intend to pass them down to my brothers oldest boy… tradition.) I have purchased many more through the years.
I am a legal and responsible gun owner, that takes safety VERY seriously. I was raised with firearms, and grew up in a hunting culture. (Though I have slept on more deerstands than I have hunted.)
I have been trained by the U.S. Government on proper use of firearms in warfare. I was trained in proper use of firearms, and safety by my father, and both Grandfathers before that. (I continue to train concealed permit carriers in hand to hand tactics, with and without firearms.)
I have a few of what some may call “assault weapons”… However, I refer to them as “Anti-Assault Weapons“. I also keep large amounts of ammo for each. (My children do not like to shoot them, but have, and are familiar with each... they have their own pink weapons… girls.)
I have firearms exclusively for home defense, including tactical shotguns with #7 shot, (enough to do great damage to an intruder at close range but not penetrate the walls of my house, and possibly injuring my loved ones), and of course handguns. I have hunting rifles, and shotguns. I even have some “collectibles”, and pellet rifles.
It is my belief that everyone should be familiar with firearms, I could list off dozens of reasons why, but I can also understand someone having a fear of guns, and not wanting to own one. I don’t understand someone that would not use every tool available to them to protect their families, neighbors, and friends, and worse, wanting to keep others from having the ability to do so, if God forbid, a situation ever called for extreme violence. Unfortunately, there are situations where the only thing that can possibly stop a bad person with a gun, is a good person with a gun.
I mentioned earlier that I could name off dozens of reasons why firearms are important….I always thought this VIDEO had a powerful message… It is true, police take minutes to get there when your gun is in your hand right now, and horrible things can happen in seconds… surely you have seen many on Facebook. But one of the biggest things that stands out to me is Kennesaw Georgia. where it is mandated that every household have at least one firearm. This is posted on their website still today…
Kennesaw once again was in the news on May 1, 1982, when the city unanimously passed a law requiring “every head of household to maintain a firearm together with ammunition.” After passage of the law, the burglary rate in Kennesaw declined and even today, the City has the lowest crime rate in Cobb County.
According to a post at freedomoutpost.com actually states the ordinance [Sec 34 -21]…
(a) In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.
(b)Exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who suffer a physical or mental disability which would prohibit them from using such a firearm. Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony.
Gary Demar lives near Kennesaw and wrote a blog post boasting on the cities extremely low murder rate…
In fact, from 1982 through 2009, Kennesaw had been nearly murder free with one murder occurring in 2007. There were three murders in 2010 committed by the same man in what is described as a “school safety zone,” an area extending 1,000 feet from any school, including adult colleges and technical schools. This means that even though Kennesaw has the most liberal gun laws in the United States, employees at the facility where the murders were committed could not have a gun on the premises.
Kennesaw sounds pretty good, especially if you see this VIDEO piece from that dude Maddow who thinks we should get rid of all guns.
So, I know that my opinions are just that, mine. That’s why I want to ask for your opinion…
