A Cheyenne woman has been hospitalized for treatment of injuries she suffered when a pit bull running loose attacked her.

Sgt. Rob Dafoe of the Cheyenne Police Department identified the woman as 39-year-old Nicole Keller. He says the dog bit her on her lower body.

A local hospital spokeswoman says Keller was in good condition but would be hospitalized overnight.

Dafoe says police were called to Keller's house on Cheyenne's east side after 7 a.m. Wednesday. Officers found Keller on top of her car trying to escape from the dog.

The intact, male dog charged at an officer, who fired at the animal with a rifle but missed it. Cheyenne Animal Control officers later found the dog at its owner's residence nearby.

Cheyenne police and animal control officers are investigating.
