UPDATE: Cheyenne Mountain Lion Search Fruitless
A lockdown at Carey Junior High School has been lifted after Cheyenne police failed to locate a reported mountain lion in the area.
Officer Kevin Malatesta says police searched the area for about an hour, but never found anything.
"We talked to a lot of people and nobody saw anything other than the original reporting party," said Malatesta.
Malatesta says it's possible the eyewitness may have confused a tan dog that was seen wandering in the area for a mountain lion.
"We just want to make sure that people recognize that they may see dogs or something like that out, but a mountain lion is pretty unique," said Malatesta. "They do actually have some distinct characteristics that would help people to identify a mountain lion versus another animal."
This morning's incident comes less than two weeks after a young, male mountain lion was captured in east Cheyenne.
"At this point in time we don't have any indication there is actually a mountain lion, however we are continuing to search," said Officer Kevin Malatesta.
"We have noticed a dog that was wandering around the area and that may be what this person saw," he added.
As a precaution, police are advising anyone who lives in the area to move their pets inside and stay indoors.
