With insufficient support for a referendum on Casper's indoor public smoking ban the new ordinance will take effect on September 1st. The topic came up at Tuesday's regular city council meeting.

Mayor Kenyne Schlager, says now they look to do some public education and address misconceptions .

"Unfortunately I think some of the citizens are worried that there will be police everywhere and we're gonna go give tickets and we're gonna give so many tickets that people are gonna end up in jail and that's truly not the case."

Schlager suggests that most enforcement will come through community effort and gentle reminders, citizen to citizen. She says the city will be looking for methods to inform visitors and remind residents that public indoor smoking after September 1st will no longer be allowed.
