It's nearly halfway through the filing period for candidates interested in running for the nonpartisan seats in municipal governments, but the field is rather thin so far, according to the elections office of the Natrona County Clerk.

Only three people have filed to run for the six positions on Casper City Council, and two of those are running to represent one of the city's three wards.

In Ward II, which represents west Casper, incumbent Shawn Johnson and newcomer Mark Kawa have filed for a four-year term.

No one has filed for an unexpired two-year term in Ward II.

In Ward III, which represents east Casper, political newcomer and former assistant Police Chief Steven Freel has filed for one of the two available four-year terms.

In Ward I, which represents central Casper, no one has filed for a four-year term and a two-year unexpired term.

The activity has been greater in the towns of Mills, Bar Nunn, and Evansville.

Mills has endured a lot of turmoil in the past couple of years with the criminal prosecutions and resignations of the former mayor and clerk/treasurer.

As of Thursday, James Hollander and Darla Ives have filed for two four-year terms on the Mills Town Council, and incumbent Mayor Seth Coleman and Mike Pyatt have filed for the four-year term for mayor.

In Bar Nunn, Robert Hoover has filed for one of two positions on the town council, but no one has filed for mayor.

In Evansville, Joseph Knop has filed for one of two four-year terms on the town council, and Jennifer Sorenson has filed to run for mayor.

The primary election is Aug. 21.
