2013 was a banner year for Wyoming parks and historic sites.

According to data from Wyoming State Parks and Cultural Resources division, 2.9 million people visited state parks and historic sites last year, making it the best-attended year on record.

Park system officials say the figure shows a five percent visitation increase when compared with numbers from 2012 and a roughly four percent increase when compared with combined figures from the five-year average.

Park system officials say new facilities, amenities and programming encouraged the record gains seen in 2013, along with hard work from park staff.

Department officials counted visitors at 28 sites within the system last year.
