A spokesman for the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Department is reminding people to make sure they are prepared before hitting the back country this winter.

Dick Blust says you should make sure your gas tank is full before heading out of town, and have a supply of cold weather clothing--including boots--on hand. Other recommendations include:

-shovels and other gear to dig your vehicle out of the snow

-enough food and water to survive for a few days if you become stranded

-a GPS and the ability ti use it.

-A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB)

-A cell phone and charger. But remember cell phone service may not be reliable in remote areas.

Blust also recommends  that you check the weather forecast, and if severe weather is forecast, consider weather the trip needs to be made immediately. Blust says you should also know your vehicle and it's limitations. And finally Blust says if you do become stranded, stay with your vehicle.
