UN In Haiti Accuses Police Of Abuse

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — U.N. human rights officials in Haiti are accusing the national police department of excessive force, saying there is evidence officers may have killed at least nine people in the capital.

The charges are raised in two reports by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the human rights section of the U.N peacekeeping mission in Haiti.

The reports focus on investigations involving 20 members of the police force who may have committed abuses in six separate incidents.

Of particular concern: A 44-year-old man who was beaten to death inside a police station in the presence of senior officers.

The reports were released Tuesday.

A police spokesman couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
