The U.S. economy grew faster than expected in the July-September quarter, underscoring that the United States is not in a recession despite distressingly high inflation and interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.

A committee within the National Bureau of Economic Research, a trade group, determines when recessions begin and end.

The IMF's assessment represents a breathtaking downgrade.

Any score below 50 suggests a shrinking economy.

The S&P 500 lost 5.2%.

The president also is pledging federal support for airlines struggling because of the pandemic.

He also said he sees a chance of recession and promised help to the struggling airline industry.

They expect economic growth to slow from 2.9% last year to 2.3% in 2019 and 1.8% in 2020.

Tom Gallagher with the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services says it's unclear if the recession in the state is over.

The Labor Department announced that the U.S. economy added 157,000 jobs in January. The unemployment rate inched upward by a tenth of a point, to 7.9 percent.
