The University of Wyoming has received a $9.77 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy for a project that would determine the feasibility of creating a commercial-scale geological storage complex for carbon dioxide in Wyoming.

Planning began in 2003 and work started in 2014.

The University of Wyoming Geological Museum will be able to display the entirety of its fossil collection thanks to a $101,413 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The department cited impacts to air quality, noise pollution and tribal resources, among other areas.

The legislation requires UW to respond to the legislature's Joint Appropriations Committee no later than Nov. 1.

Miller says workers resumed working on constructing infrastructure for the facility in April.

Trains would carry the coal from Montana, Wyoming and other states, which would be loaded onto ships headed to Asia.
