Medical marijuana won’t be allowed on Wyoming’s Wind River Reservation just yet after not enough people were present to vote on the proposal.

The Wind River Inter-Tribal Council asked tribal members to refrain from outside gatherings of 10 or more people.

Advocates say legal medical marijuana and industrial hemp could diversify the reservation's economy.

Participation is voluntary.

A typical standing committee meets four to five times a year and sponsors its own legislation.

The group is expected to present research and a proposal at the next general council meeting, possibly in January.

An Eastern Shoshone herd established on Wyoming's Wind River Indian Reservation in 2016 has grown from 10 to 33 buffalo.

Tribal IDs can currently be used to register, but a driver's license, its number or a Social Security number must also be presented.

Officials say the college is working with Eastern Shoshone leaders on a similar agreement.

SageWest operates hospitals in Lander and Riverton and is owned by Apollo Global Management, a New York-based equity firm.
