A Casper man accused of trying to kill another man, in an argument over a woman, has entered his plea in court.

Thirty-six year old Zechariah Jones, has pleaded not guilty to one count of attempted second degree murder and one count of aggravated assault.

Prosecutors are also seeking to label Jones as a habitual criminal.

Investigators with the Casper Police Department say in late August, a call came in, regarding a shooting that had taken place near the intersection of K and North Lincoln Streets.

The victim…Zachary Albrecht, and witnesses told police that Jones approached Albrecht, pointed a gun at him and shot him in the abdomen, then got in a vehicle and fled the area.

Witnesses also said that Jones was the only person in the vehicle at the time.

Albrecht was taken to a hospital, with non-life threatening injuries.

He told investigators that he was meeting Jones to fight him over a dispute they were having over a woman.

Investigators found a .22-caliber shell casing on scene and a later found the vehicle.

Upon contacting the vehicle’s owner, officers learned that the vehicle had been loaned to Jones, earlier in the day.

Investigators say Jones’ girlfriend picked him up later in the day.

She said Jones then changed his clothes, and then burned what he was wearing earlier.

Police eventually found Jones and when interviewed, Jones said he did not shoot Albrecht, but he was at the scene at the time, and could be charged as an accomplice, but he refused to elaborate any further.

Jones is being held on $250,000 bond awaiting trial, and has three prior felony convictions on his record.

If he ends up getting the habitual criminal tag, he could be sentenced to life in prison.
