A Casper man could spend the rest of his life behind bars, in a case where he’s accused of trying to kill someone.

Thirty-six year old Zechariah Jones has been charged with one count of attempted second degree murder and one count of aggravated assault.

Investigators with the Casper Police Department say on Sunday, August 24th, a call came in at around 6pm, regarding a shooting that had taken place near the intersection of K and North Lincoln Streets.

The victim…Zachary Albrecht, and witnesses told police that Jones approached Albrecht, pointed a gun at him and shot him in the abdomen, then got in a vehicle and fled the area.

Witnesses also said that Jones was the only person in the vehicle at the time.

Albrecht was taken to a hospital, where he was expected to survive his injuries.

Investigators found a .22-caliber shell casing on scene and a later found the vehicle.

Upon contacting the vehicle’s owner, officers learned that the vehicle had been loaned to Jones, earlier in the day.

Investigators say Jones’ girlfriend picked him up later in the day.

She said Jones then changed his clothes, and then burned what he was wearing earlier.

Police eventually found Jones and when interviewed, he said he did not shoot Albrecht, but he was at the scene at the time, and could be charged as an accomplice, but Jones refused to elaborate any further.

Jones is being held on $250,000 bond awaiting trial and normally he would face between 20 years to life in prison for the attempted second degree murder charge, and up to 10 years on the aggravated assault charge if convicted.

However, prosecutors told a judge that Jones has three prior felony convictions, which could make him eligible for the habitual criminal tag.

If that happens, he could be sentenced to life in prison.
