JACKSON, Wyoming (AP) — Wyoming's Teton County has imposed a weight restriction on nine roads to help ease the damage from snow melt and rain.

Teton County Public Works Director Sean O'Malley says heavy weight on waterlogged roads can cause rutting, cracking and eventually potholes.

O'Malley told the county commissioners Monday morning that his office has already seen damage to some roads. He says the cracked surface collects water, which expands and contracts and begins to create potholes.

The nine roads are under a 40,000-pound gross vehicle weight restriction.

O'Malley says the roads will be opened to full weight — 60,000 pounds gross vehicle weight — once they dry out.
