CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Gov. Matt Mead has signed into law a measure designating the Wyoming big sagebrush as the official state shrub.

Nearly the entire student body of Hulett High School traveled to Cheyenne to attend Friday's bill-signing ceremony.

Bill sponsor Sen. Ogden Driskill, a Republican from Devils Tower, says students in a Hulett High School biology class came up with the state shrub idea and approached him and other lawmakers to sponsor it. Students testified for it at legislative committee hearings.

Driskill says the success of the bill has inspired students to be more involved in state government.

Hulett Mayor Vivian Odell is also a school bus driver. She drove the bus that transported the scores of Hulett High School students to the bill-signing event.
