CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — The Wyoming Senate has given preliminary approval to a state legislative redistricting plan.

The Senate approved the bill Tuesday, keeping it the same as the version the House approved earlier. The legislative redistricting is necessary to address population shifts in the last census.

The Senate defeated an amendment proposed by Sen. Cale Case, a Lander Republican, who served as co-chairman of the interim committee that drafted the redistricting plan.

Case suggested stripping off a House amendment that would allow Republican Sen. Curt Meier, R-LaGrange, to keep his seat. Meier would have lost his Senate seat under a version of the redistricting bill approved by a joint House-Senate committee in January because his residence would no longer have been within his district.

The bill needs two more approvals in the Senate.
