In an effort to promote Wyoming as a supporter of both shooting sports and the firearms industry, Governor Matt Mead announced Monday three recreational shooting initiatives and declared the day "Wyoming's Day at the Range."

According to a press release from the governor's office, the Open Ranges Initiative will foster locally-led partnerships to make public shooting ranges more accessible in Wyoming.

The other initiatives are shooting competitions: the Wyoming 100 Initiative will be an amateur-level competition open to all shooters designed to recognize the top 100 shooters in Wyoming, while the Governor's Match will be a national two-gun (semi-automatic rifle and pistol) match featuring some of the best competitive shooters in the country.

Representatives of Wyoming firearms companies joined Gov. Mead as he signed a proclamation declaring Monday "Wyoming's Day at the Range."

"Wyoming is a firearms state and we are proud of that," said Gov. Mead. "These initiatives promote safe shooting and participation in shooting sports -- whether that's hunting, target shooting or sanctioned competitions. Working with the Game and Fish Department, the National Rifle Association, the firearms industry and local governments we hope to open more opportunity for people to shoot safely."

Rules for the Wyoming 100 will be posted on the Game and Fish website and at the Wyoming's Top 100 Facebook page. Those planning on joining the competition must have a Wyoming Conservation Stamp, available from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

"We have a growing firearms industry in Wyoming," added Gov. Mead. "Some of those companies relocate dhere because of our support for their industry. Some are Wyoming entrepreneurs starting a new business. They are helping to diversify our economy -- we are glad to have them here."
