Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney says she is ''furious and heartbroken" over the way Judge Brett Kavanaugh is being treated during the confirmation hearings for his nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Rep. Cheney, who is a Republican, said Tuesday she has known Kavanaugh and his wife for many years, and that he is exactly the kind of person who is needed on the high court.

The congresswoman, in a Tuesday morning phone interview on KGAB radio in Cheyenne, accused Democrats of "undermining due process" and said they ''clearly have exploited Dr. Ford."

Christine Blasey Ford is a psychology professor who has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her in 1982. Kavanaugh has denied the allegations.

The decision on whether to confirm Kavanaugh is in the hands of the U.S. Senate

Cheney said she is in Wyoming today to tour areas devastated by fires near Pinedale, adding she would ''do everything possible" to work for federal disaster aid for victims of the fire. She said those efforts would include working with the U.S. Forest Service  ''making sure they understand the devastation that has been caused here."
