CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — The federal Drug Enforcement Administration is warning Wyoming residents about an extortion scam involving people who bought prescription drugs online.

Officials say the scammers are calling consumers and telling them such purchases are illegal. The Associated Press reports the victims are then told they can transfer funds electronically to an overseas location to avoid arrest or property seizure.

Barbra Roach with the DEA's Denver Field Division says the agency has received several reports of Wyoming residents falling for the scam.

The Associated Press also reports some scammers are trying to get personal information by claiming to represent Medicaid or a company that helps people register for Medicaid. Another scam involves a person selling items to Medicaid recipients, falsely claiming that Medicaid will reimburse them for the purchase.
